Unlike short codes, which are typically 5-6 digits, A2P 10DLC uses standard 10-digit local phone numbers. This system is designed to provide better delivery quality and spam protection for A2P messaging, making it more reliable and trustworthy for businesses and consumers. It's particularly relevant for businesses engaging in marketing, customer service, or alert notifications via text messages.

How does it work?

Purchase a Regular 10-Digit USA Long Code Number: The first step in setting up A2P 10DLC is to acquire a standard 10-digit long code number. This is not a toll-free number but a regular local phone number that will be used for your A2P messaging.

You can purchase a phone number by going to Settings > Phone Numbers and buying any 10-digit phone number that is not a toll-free number.

Complete Your Business Profile: Navigate to the 'Settings' section and find the 'Business Profile' option. Here, you'll need to provide detailed information about your business. This profile helps in establishing your identity and purpose for using A2P 10DLC services. This will be on the next page to help you step by step on information to provide.

Complete the A2P Survey: Upon accessing the landing page, you'll be prompted to fill out an A2P survey. This survey is crucial as it gathers specific information about your messaging needs and usage patterns. The responses help in tailoring the A2P 10DLC service to better suit your business requirements.

Follow Post-Survey Steps: After completing the survey, you'll receive a series of follow-up steps. What are my next steps?

Once your brand and campaign registration are completed you will be in an "In Progress" status during the approval process.

The time it takes to get Twilio approval for A2P 10DLC can vary. Typically, the approval process can take anywhere from a 2-5 business days but the timeframe depends on several factors, including the completeness and accuracy of the information provided in your business profile and A2P survey, and the current volume of applications being processed. It's important to provide detailed and accurate information to avoid delays in the approval process.

Is this required to send SMS (text) messages?

Yes, it is required to successfully send SMS (text) messages from ANY applications or CRM.

This is not a platform specific requirement - it is mandated by the carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, etc. that all 10-digit long code phone numbers be registered with the associated business in order to successfully deliver messages.

Alternatively, you may purchase a Toll-Free number. Purchasing a Toll-Free number does not preclude you from registration, it is simply a different process. This is usually ideal for businesses that are not United States based and do not have a physical location inside the continental United States.
